In the hustle and bustle of modern life, finding moments of calm and relaxation can feel like a luxury. However, understanding the intricacies of the nervous system and learning how to activate its calming branch, the parasympathetic nervous system, can empower us to cultivate inner peace and a sense of wellbeing.
Understanding the Nervous System:
The nervous system serves as the body's communication network, coordinating and regulating various physiological processes. It comprises the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves that extend throughout the body). One crucial aspect of the peripheral nervous system is the autonomic nervous system, responsible for involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate. Simply put, these bodily functions happen without needing to think about it!
The Parasympathetic Nervous System:
Within the autonomic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system acts as the counterpart to the sympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the body's "fight or flight" response. While the sympathetic system mobilises the body for action in times of stress or danger, the parasympathetic system promotes relaxation, rest, and restoration. It slows heart rate, stimulates digestion, and conserves energy, creating a state conducive to relaxation and wellbeing.
Finding Calm in the Noise
Understanding this can help us take action towards experiencing deep rest in the mind and body, and achieving some quiet in the system amongst the messy noise of life. Of course our nervous system is designed to keep us safe, but trying to explain to it that it's an email that needs responding to or a conversation that needs to happen rather than a bear threatening our life is easier said than done!
Of course, it's not a one size fits all so working out what works for you to ensure calm is up to you to discover. The Positive Wellness Journal is the perfect tool to make pledges to your mind, body and soul on a daily basis to help allow your nervous system to come back down to earth.

Co-founder Ali's favourite way of calming the nervous system...
"Embroidery has become my go-to when life gets too hectic and I need to calm my nervous system. As stress builds and my mind races, I find myself turning to my trusty embroidery hoop and box of colourful threads. The repetitive motion of the needle and the rhythmic stitching works wonders in calming my frazzled nerves, allowing me to zone in (or out?) and find a sense of peace amidst the chaos. With each stitch, I can feel the tension ease, bringing me back to a place of calm and clarity. Embroidery isn't just a crafty hobby for me; it's a form of self-care that helps me regain perspective and tackle life's challenges." - Ali
